Runners responsibility and equipment

Every runner must read the race rules before the event (available below).

Participants are not insured by the organiser.

Race equipment must be appropriate. We recommend trail running shoes; in wet conditions, studded trail shoes or orienteering shoes may be a good option. For longer distances, carrying a lightweight windproof jacket is recommended but not mandatory.

Carry your phone with you. We recommend installing the 112 emergency app, as it provides your coordinates in case of an emergency.

Only participate if you are in good health.

Familiarise yourself thoroughly with your route before the race.

All runners must wear a race number attached to the front of the body, either at stomach or thigh level. The back of the race number contains a timing chip, which is why it is mandatory to wear the number from start to finish.

Routes markings

Routes are marked with pictures of the route animals. The Raven is an exception, however! There are no separate Raven signs on the course, as the Raven route follows the same path as the Whitetail Deer route. Those running the 25 km Raven route should therefore follow the Whitetail Deer signs on the course.

The animal pictures are placed mainly at intersections and kilometre markers. In addition to these, the routes will during the race also be marked with white 90 cm WVTR flags and spray paint on the ground.

Race Arena

The race arena is located at the Västerby Sports Centre. The start and finish are on the grass between Ekenäshallen and the ski lodge. The race centre also houses the race office, a café, portable toilets, a warm-up area, waste collection points, and more. Changing rooms and showers are available indoors in the ski lodge.

A water station is located outside the ski lodge where you can refill your water bottle.

Gear can be left in the changing rooms (unattended) during the race. The car park is right next to the race centre, so it is also easy to leave your gear in your car if you are arriving by vehicle. Gear storage is available at the ski lodge.

Smoking is prohibited on the grass area!

Western Village Trail Run buffs are available for purchase at the race office for €20 each (limited quantity). Please note that we do not accept cash at the race office — payment by card or contactless only. Cash is accepted at the cafés.

Race Area

The entire course takes place in the Västerby outdoor recreation area — expect stunning West Nyland forest at its finest. The area is a favourite among skiers, orienteers, fitness enthusiasts, mountain bikers, and nature lovers. It covers 1,500 hectares of varied terrain, including dense spruce forests, lake scenery, bogs reminiscent of Lapland, and open rock faces typical of the archipelago.

The area has several hiking trails with rest stops, the longest of which is 16 km. In winter, Västerby offers 12 km of ski tracks, 3 km of which are lit. The area also features several swimming spots, a bird tower, and glacial potholes. Västerby is well suited for camping too.

An outdoor map of the area is available for collection at the Raseborg Museum (Kustaa Vaasan katu 11, Tammisaari), or you can print it here: Västerby outdoor recreation area
